It feels like everyone is on social media, but let it be known that not everyone is on every social media channel. Every year, our favorite (and not-so-favorite) platforms evolve. As we enter the second half of 2024, it’s important to pay attention to which social media channels are gaining stream and which ones are fading into the background. Let’s take a look into what’s hot and what’s not.
What’s Hot
TikTok
TikTok isn’t just a trend anymore – it’s a phenomenon. What started as a platform for lip-syncing teens has morphed into a creative outlet for all generations. From viral dance-offs to “what I eat in a day” content, TikTok’s short-form videos continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Its algorithm is scarily good at keeping you hooked, so it’s no surprise it’s still on the rise.
BeReal.
BeReal. is an app that is gaining traction, especially amongst younger users that goes against traditional curated feeds – it’s an app that sends a daily notification to capture and share what you are doing in that exact moment. No filters and no edits necessary. It’s all about authenticity, and users love the raw, unpolished glimpses into each other’s lives.
Discord
Discord has successfully expanded beyond its gaming roots, becoming a go-to for all kinds of organizations. Whether you’re using it for company chats, book clubs or fitness groups, its voice, video and text chat capabilities make it a versatile tool for everyone.
What’s Not so Hot
X (Twitter)
X, formerly Twitter, has had its fair share of challenges. From undergoing a name change, dealing with bots and attempting to introduce new features, it’s clear the platform is struggling to maintain relevance. While it still serves as a go-to for real-time news, updates and conversations, the user growth is not what it used to be.
Snapchat
Snapchat, once the shining star for millennials with its fun filters and disappearing conversations, is now a fading star. With Instagram and TikTok incorporating similar features, Snapchat’s unique appeal has diminished. It still holds a loyal user base, and those who use it love it – especially teens. However, it’s not the must-have app that it once was.
Wild Card
Threads
Instagram’s new sister app is making a comeback. Focused on close friends and conversations, Threads aims to create a more personal social experience. It’s still finding its footing, but with Meta to back it, it’s one to watch. Check out our recent blog post where we dive deeper into what Threads is all about.
